Welcome:This message is to welcome and inspire you to attend the 2023 convention at the Independence Hotel in Independence, OR April 28 - 30, 2023.
Just for you, here is your personal invitation to attend the Oregon State Organization 2023 Convention April 28-30, 2023, in Independence, Oregon. It’s jam-packed with workshops, opportunities to meet with sisters throughout the state, and great food! Why should a busy teacher or a busy retiree come to a convention? Join other fantastic women who share a background as an educator. It’s inspiring and refreshing. Wonderful workshops are planned to refresh your interest in learning. If you need them, you can earn PDU’s—those Professional Development Units that your current position may require. (Include HOW MANY can be earned.) Friday offers fun at Left Coast Cellars then some practice on website skills. You can help direct the future of DKG by voting for our officer and committee candidates—or you could volunteer for the open positions—Oregon Secretary and Oregon Finance Committee—when the president calls for nominations “from the floor.” Polish up your leadership skills during discussions. AND plan to have some fun in a lovely setting on the river. I will see you soon, Brenda Jensen Oregon State Organization President WHY SHOULD A BUSY TEACHER OR A RETIREE COME TO A CONVENTION?

April 28 - 30Tips to Newcomers
To help make your first Oregon State Organization Convention a pleasant and comfortable experience, the following tips, and information are provided. If you have questions about anything more, please ask a chapter sister who has attended a previous convention. At convention, there will be hostesses happy to answer your questions.
Have a memorable experience that will support your personal and professional growth as a key woman educator! ASSIGNED SEATING: The only events with assigned seating are at meals. Your table assignment will be designated on your meal ticket. If there is no designation, you may choose your own table. If there is a head table, nameplates will be placed for those assignments. DRESS CODE: For workshops and meetings most attendees wear business casual clothing. The Rose Banquet is usually more formal and most members and guests dress accordingly. Key pins and badges are worn to all events, except for the Rose Banquet when many members choose to not wear key pins or nametags in order to protect their finer clothing. Friday Night’s Events: Casual clothes are the norm for Friday night, as many go to the events directly after arriving, often after a long road trip. . If you plan to arrive in Independence by noon, check “I’m Interested” on your registration form and join us at the Left Coast Cellars for wine and food of your choice. Evening event is an opportunity to learn your way around the new International website and to explore the Oregon website. Both have much to offer. HOSPITALITY ROOM: Take time to visit the hospitality room and visit. They will have a warm welcome, great refreshments, and interesting conversation. It’s a good way to meet new friends and “break the ice” when you may feel displaced or a bit unsure. It’s a fine place to relax, too. If you are not registered at the Independence Hotel, a continental breakfast will be available in the Hospitality Room. LUNCHEON TIPS: Save your dessert until the ceremonial birthday candle has been lit and the birthday song is sung. Baskets are usually passed during lunch to collect donations for State Scholarship funds. Individuals and/or chapters may donate cash or checks. Indicate which fund your money should go into, if you have a preference. Often First-Timers are recognized at this function as a group. NAME TAGS & MEAL TICKETS Name tags are usually on an elastic string and worn on the neck. All participants need to wear their official name tags for on-site activities, particularly business sessions. While they need not be worn if you are away from the hotel, it is a nice advertisement for DKG to alert businesses and local citizens to the reason you are visiting their city. Meal tickets will be collected at each meal and are conveniently stowed behind your name tag. Remember to bring your banquet ticket with you, as you probably will not be wearing your nametag for that event. Saturday lunch and banquet are both buffet-style. OFFICIAL PINS: Please wear your key pin and nametag to convention functions except for the Rose Banquet. The key pin is normally worn on the left side with nothing above it. A chapter president’s pin is worn directly beneath the key pin. Magnetic ribbon badges are available for purchase from the Unique Boutique and are convenient for protecting clothing. REGISTRATION/CHECK IN You must register to participate in convention business. Pick up your convention meal tickets, name badge, and program at the convention registration table. (This is not to be confused with the hotel registration desk!) We encourage you to bring a bag to convention to carry registration materials and other items you might collect. TIMING: It’s a good idea to arrive at events a few minutes early so you are seated before the presenter begins. Personnel try to keep things moving and on schedule, especially at business sessions and workshops. VOTING: All members registered for convention are entitled to vote on issues during general business sessions. Following Robert’s Rules of Order procedures, any registered member can address the Chair with comments or ask for information on an issue. At an Executive Board meeting, all members are welcome and encouraged to attend; however, only chapter presidents, past state presidents, and state officers may vote. |
